Destination Information:
A place known for its resorts and white sand beaches, Punta Cana is the leisure lover’s ultimate getaway. Located on the most eastern cape of the Dominican Republic, the region looks out over the azure seas of the Atlantic Ocean, and dense mangrove forests where a multitude of birds and animals unique to the Caribbean live. But more than beach lounging and relaxing, Punta Cana is a playground for all levels of thrill seekers. From those who find nothing more exciting than a challenging game of golf to adrenaline junkies’ who′ll go from windsurfing to deep sea diving without blinking, opportunities abound. Many of the resorts on Punta Cana have all-inclusive packages offering adventure and relaxation all on the same bill. If you′re more of a do-it-yourselfer, though, you can just as easily enjoy the spoils of the soft sands and ocean views on your own. And when that become repetitive, you can head out of town where you’ll find cigars, ancient petroglyphs, and culture that dates back to the arrival of Columbus.
HISTORY
Punta Cana was literally put on the map in 1492, when a brash Italian named Christopher Columbus set out on his maiden voyage to the Orient. He didn’t get that far, but he did land on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which is now divided between the countries of Haiti to the west and Dominican Republic to the east. There, Columbus encountered the Taíno people who were native to the region. A number of archaeological finds still remain as a reminder of their long history on the islands, including pottery shards and petroglyphs. Hispaniola grew considerably after the Spanish and French arrived on the island, and by 1494, the first European settlement in the New World was located in Santo Domingo.
The native Taíno people named the land Higuey, which translates as ‘sunlight’ and refers to the first place the light touches. While the people themselves did not last through the area′s European colonization, the name did, and today refers to the capital city of the province of La Altagracia. In 1697, the Spanish allowed the French to control the western half of the island known as Haiti, which struggled for many years to gain its independence, until it was finally successful in 1844.
ECOTOURISM
While Punta Cana is best known as a popular place for mostly European visitors escaping to plush hotels for a week before jetting back home, that doesn′t mean you can’t put some elbow grease into your trip and see some remarkable things unlike anywhere else in the world. The Dominican Republic, especially on the eastern half of the island and in the National Park of the East, is famous for its underground labyrinth of caves, which is home to one of the largest networks of caves in the world. Manantial de Padre Nuestro is one place that takes spelunking and diving to new depths, conjoing the two to allow exploration of the underground-underwater maze of caves where the remains of Taíno culture await, perfectly preserved.
On the northern part of the island is the unique Laguna Los Haitises National Park, where you’ll find a geologically diverse countryside of rolling hills sweeping into a mangrove forest that falls into the sea. Here, small islets off the coast provide protection for pelicans, herons, and other sea-faring birds. Right in the heart of the resort scene is the remarkable Punta Cana Ecological Reserve that is considered one of the best kept secrets of eco-tourism. A huge array of creatures in this bio-diverse setting live around the stretch of lagoons within the park. Pull on those hiking boots and check out the hundreds of miles of some of the Dominican Republic’s lesser known marvels before the word gets out.
FROM GREENS TO BEACHES
If you haven’t cleaned out your spikes yet or considered packing your golf clubs for the trip down to Punta Cana, you might be kicking yourself later after you see the excellent golf courses that litter the region. From the world-class Pete Dye creations near La Romana, to the newly created brain-child of legend Jack Nicklaus at Punta Espada Golf Club, the golf opportunities are endless here. The region is unsurpassed. A number of courses are right on the ocean, with Dye’s Teeth of the Dog holding the distinction as the Caribbean’s best golf course, hands down. The courses themselves vary in difficulty and each holds its own distinct personality. Even if you are not the world’s best golfer, you’ll still enjoy the scenic vistas and the cushy clubhouses that provide even the beginner golfer the charms of the pros.
Punta Cana is, as you would expect, a beach bum’s ultimate paradise. With spring and summer-like weather in the 70s and 80s year-round, and a plethora of white sand beaches as far as the eye can see. It’s no wonder that Punta Cana remains mostly a resort destination for those wishing to get some serious sun time in and enjoy the calm waters off the coast. The beaches can sometimes get a little breezy, which makes the area something of a mecca for windsurfers.
For the most part, you’ll find mostly European patrons lounging on the beach. Punta Cana is still secret enough that the American draw remains marginal, but the interest is growing. The beaches up toward Bavaro tend to be more crowded because of the number of resorts, so try heading north or south from there to find the more secluded sandy shores. Isla Saona is a great option if you want to escape the hotel complexes and get back to nature, enjoying wildlife and picturesque views of a seemingly deserted island. Saona also has many options for snorkeling and wading out in the shallow water over sandbars.
